Joo was born and raised in Los Angeles but moved to South Korea at age 9. She started playing golf in the fourth grade after joining her father at the driving range one day. She is inspired by South Korean golfer Chun In-gee. She holds dual U.S. and Korean citizenship and previously played as Alicia Joo.
